Summer style inspiration: wafty, wide-leg trousers

Ines de la Fressange at home in Provence provides a masterclass in elegant summer style. The 62-year-old model/author/ designer explains to Harper’s Bazaar how she’s refined her style over the years, right down to the ‘simple things: white jeans, oversized shirts, navy blue jackets. My evolution is less and less and less.’ I’ve always preferred the minimalist, gentlewoman vibe, particularly in summer when fewer clothes and uncluttered silhouettes make perfect sense. Cool and chic and faff-free. And with wide-leg trousers and billowing shirts, natural fabrics, such as linen, silk and cotton, are best. This is the season when Ines de la Fressange adds a chambray shirt and wafty linen trousers to her list of simple things. Though personally, I’d swap the blister-inducing, thong sandals for oh-so comfy Birkenstocks…

Meanwhile in London, I’ve been giving my loose-fitting linen shirt and silk wide leg pants a whirl. The breezy trousers from Winser London are part of a new project; a limited edition, sustainable collection made in the UK from high quality, end-of-roll fabrics unused by catwalk designers. One of my old editors banned linen from the magazine, she couldn’t stand the crumple but I’ve never had a problem with a natural wrinkle or two…

That’s not my house in the background…I may be in South London but I’m dreaming of next summer’s vacation in the South of France.
